A Facebook spokesman on Aug. 17 announced the banning of several WhatsApp accounts linked to the Taliban after they regained control of Afghanistan and intended to use the mobile app to aid their control. But the Taliban have criticized the social media company for blocking its right to freedom of expression.

"The Taliban are considered terrorists under US law and we have banned their accounts from our program under any anti-institutional or malicious policy." A Facebook spokesman told AFP on August 17.

A spokesman for the company said it had worked with a group of Afghan experts who spoke the original Dari and Pashto languages ​​and had basic knowledge of the issue to guide its policies. A WhatsApp spokesman told AFP in an email that the company had to comply with US regulations. The company is also seeking more information from relevant US authorities in Afghanistan from other accounts that could contact the Taliban.
